Madagascar Essential Oils: Ravintsara, Ylang-Ylang, Geranium and More – The Buyer’s Guide

Madagascar is one of the world’s great reservoirs of aromatic plants. Its geographic isolation has produced a unique flora, and its essential oils are sought after by aromatherapy labs, cosmetic brands and perfumers. Ravintsara, ylang-ylang, geranium, lemongrass, ginger: here is how to choose, check and buy Malagasy essential oils with confidence.

Madagascar’s signature essential oils

OilPlantProfile and uses
RavintsaraCinnamomum camphora (leaves)Fresh, eucalyptus-like notes, rich in 1,8-cineole. An aromatherapy essential, especially in winter.
Ylang-ylangCananga odorata (flowers)Floral and sunny, highly prized in perfumery and cosmetics. Distilled in several fractions (extra, I, II, III, complete).
GeraniumPelargonium (leaves)Rosy, green notes, popular in skincare and perfumery.
LemongrassCymbopogon (leaves)Lemony and invigorating, used in wellness, cosmetics and home fragrance.
GingerZingiber officinale (rhizomes)Warm and spicy, used in aromatherapy, massage blends and as a flavouring.

From plant to bottle: what makes a good oil

An essential oil is most often obtained by steam distillation of the part of the plant that holds the aromatic molecules: leaves, flowers, bark or roots. Its quality depends on four factors:

  1. The raw material: the right botanical species, harvested at the right stage of maturity;
  2. Distillation: controlled duration, pressure and temperature, a clean still;
  3. Storage: suitable containers, protected from light, heat and air;
  4. Traceability: every lot must be traceable to its harvest and its distiller.

Authenticity: the key role of GC-MS analysis

Essential oils are high-value products and therefore exposed to fraud: dilution, blending with a cheaper oil, adding synthetic molecules. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identifies and quantifies the components of an oil. Compared with the species’ reference composition, this “chromatographic profile” lets you check:

  • the oil’s identity and chemotype;
  • its purity: no solvents, vegetable oils or added molecules;
  • the concentration of active molecules (1,8-cineole for ravintsara, for example).

💡 Ask for the lot’s chromatogram

A generic test report is not enough: ask for the GC-MS of the lot you are buying, with its physico-chemical indices (density, refractive index, optical rotation).

Regulation: the documents you need

In Europe, an essential oil is both a natural material and a chemical substance. Depending on the end use (cosmetics, food flavouring, wellness), several documents are expected:

📄 SDS / MSDS

Safety data sheet: hazards, transport, storage, handling.

🧪 COA + GC-MS

Lot certificate of analysis and chromatographic profile.

🌱 Organic certificate

For organic sales: operator certificate and TRACES COI.

For cosmetics, also consider the allergens to be declared on the finished product label (linalool, geraniol, citral, eugenol, etc.): your supplier should be able to give you their content.

Plantation in Madagascar

An essential oil is not judged by how it smells in the bottle, but by its chromatogram and its traceability.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ravintsara and ravensara?

They are two different plants that are often confused. Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora, leaves) is rich in 1,8-cineole; ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) has a different composition. The Latin name on the certificate and the GC-MS remove any ambiguity.

How are the oils packed for export?

In containers suited to essential oils (aluminium or stainless steel depending on volume), well filled to limit oxidation, and labelled with the lot number.

Can I get a sample?

Yes. A sample with its analysis lets you approve the scent and composition before ordering in volume.
